Twitter reacts to Eric Dier’s post-match confrontation with a fan
Eric Dier had an eventful night to say the least against Norwich City in the FA Cup fifth-round tie at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Unfortunately for Spurs, the major talking point occurred off the pitch as the player charged into the crowd to physically confront a fan.
Tensions were high after Tim Krul saved two penalties to knock Tottenham out of the tournament. The FA Cup represented the team’s best chance of winning silverware this season and this latest loss did not go down well with the crowd.
A fan appeared to abuse Dier which did not go down well with the player’s younger brother. This altercation spiralled out of control when the English midfielder stormed up the stand to seemingly trade blows.

Speaking after the match, Mourinho spoke in no uncertain terms exactly what he made of the situation. The manager ‘understood’ why Dier did what he had to do but also accepted that it was an unprofessional thing to do.
“I am with the player, and I understand the player.”
We all have families and lose our cool if we feel they are threatened. However, Dier would have done better to diffuse the situation rather than confront it. The midfielder’s reaction could be attributed to feelings getting out of control, given the result.
Mourinho: Right but unprofessional
Asked if Spurs will be taking action against Dier, Mourinho added: “If the club does that I will not agree, but he did wrong.”
It remains to be seen if the FA will take any action against the player. The incident comes at a bad time for Spurs with Mourinho grappling with a host of injury problems and a prospective ban for Dele Alli for his offensive post on social media.
Tottenham took the lead through Jan Verthonghen before Norwich equalized in the second half. Tim Krul was the hero for the Canaries as he saved from Troy Parrott and Gedson Fernandes to ensure his side went through.
A number of Spurs fans took to Twitter to react to this incident. A large number of them were sympathetic while some bemoaned a ban the midfielder is likely to receive.
Let’s take a look at some of the tweets below.

I applaud him! Nothing wrong with the reaction, when supporters overstep the mark like that. Slap on the wrist for Dier, hopefully nothing more than that

Eric Dier runs into the crowd to defend his brother getting abused and he’ll now probably end up being banned. Ridiculous if this does happen!

Oh Dier oh Dier. Absolutely dire.

Apparently something was said to his brother and dier wasn’t happy so that’s why he got involved

Dier moved faster in the stands than on the pitch

Continuing the fine tradition of Erics going into the crowd on Wednesday nights in London. But seriously, whatever the provocation this doesn’t look good for Dier. Id be very surprised to see him again this season.
