O’Hara urges Mourinho to bring Chris Smalling to Tottenham Hotspur
According to a report by Daily Express, former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O’Hara has claimed that Chris Smalling would be a good signing for Tottenham. The Manchester United star, who is currently impressing on his loan spell with Serie A giants AS Roma, has been linked with a summer move to join us, the report claims.
Italian outlet Tuttosport (h/t Daily Express) suggests that the player would be available for a fee in the region of £17m once he returns from his loan deal.
Mourinho has been chopping and changing his defensive unit ever since taking charge of the club. Most of the teams the Portuguese gaffer has managed in the past have been built on strong defences. And unfortunately, ours has lacked the punch this season.
We have conceded 39 goals in 28 league games so far – which is the highest among the top-seven teams. Only fourth-placed Chelsea have conceded as many as us.
Although Eric Dier has been putting in solid defensive shifts lately, perhaps we should pay heed to O’Hara’s words and consider a deal for Smalling.
Speaking on The Debate (h/t Daily Express), O’Hara said:
“Yeah, I like Chris Smalling. I think he had a bad time at Man United and come under a bit of scrutiny because of where they were at the time. But he’s gone out to Italy and he’s playing well and I think I’ve always rated him as an England international.”
Signing Smalling wouldn’t be the worst transfer activity. We need squad depth and the need for reinforcements has become even more apparent after last night’s defeat at the hands of Norwich City in the fifth round of the FA Cup. By crashing out of the competition, we’ve once again squandered our chances of winning silverware.

Moreover, Jan Vertonghen’s contract expires in the summer and if we are to lose him for free, Mourinho must plot a move for Smalling as per O’Hara’s advice.
