Tony Cascarino accuses Jose Mourinho of taking Tottenham backward
Former Chelsea and Leicester City striker Tony Cascarino has accused Jose Mourinho of taking Tottenham backward since taking over the club, according to talkSport (h/t Daily Star).
The Portuguese signed on to replace Mauricio Pochettino in November following the team’s slow start to the season. He won his first four games and led a revitalized Tottenham side up the table while also securing progress to the UEFA Champions League knockout stages.
That early momentum looks to have worn off, with Spurs registering nothing but losses since the winter break. With four straight losses, the boss has won just about half of his games in charge of Tottenham.
It can be argued that he has had rotten luck with injuries, with the likes of Harry Kane, Moussa Sissoko and now Son Heung-Min out for a large part of the season. Speaking about the issue, Cascarino was having none of it and went on call the team’s performances shocking.
“Even their two victories against Southampton and Man City, they were by chance in some ways.“
He went in on Mourinho and stated that both Manchester City and Southampton too could have been celebrating wins over us had things gone their way.
“Let’s not kid ourselves, it was no masterclass in coaching”
Excuses or lack of ideas
Cascarino acknowledged that Spurs do have players missing due to injury, but refused to give Mourinho leeway and compared his tactics to that which a smaller team employs against an elite one. He also stated that Tottenham fans are no fools and see that the team is going backwards in spite of Mourinho’s attempts to make it look otherwise.
New is always better!
Cascarino went on to state boldly that Mourinho has been left behind by his younger peers who have brought fresh ideas to the game. He remarked upon the manager’s inability to make doubters eat humble pie as he once did.
“I don’t see Jose as a challenging manager anymore”
He acknowledged Mourinho’s past successes but believes that his Portuguese compatriot Nuno Espirito Santo at Wolves is more likely to win a trophy than the Tottenham boss.

Cascarino can talk all he wants to but the fact is that the players are injured and the team wasn’t in the best shape when Mourinho took over either. The Portuguese gaffer is trying hard and it is evident. Although he can be a divisive figure at times due to his behaviour, there’s no doubting our boss’ quality and philosophy.
