Gary Mabbutt hopeful of strong finish to Tottenham’s season
According to Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur legend Gary Mabbutt is hopeful that the club can still salvage their season with a strong finish.
Jose Mourinho’s side crashed out of the FA Cup against Norwich City. They are however still alive in the race for the top four and in the Champions League.
RB Leipzig takes a 1-0 advantage into the next leg, but all it takes will be one goal for Spurs to turn the tie on its head. Speaking at the London Football Awards, Mabbutt has jokingly insisted that a repeat of last season’s European heroics could be on offer come May.
“We’ve got Leipzig next week in the second leg, looking forward to that one.”
The former Spurs star said that Tottenham should get back to winning ways if they need to have any chance of making the top four. Two back to back losses to fellow top-four rivals Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers have left us five points off fourth with ten games to go.
Mabbutt believes that the Tottenham squad is talented but injuries have played spoilsport. He is not wrong as injuries to key players such as Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Moussa Sissoko have left Mourinho with lesser options to choose from.
He went on to add that with such talented players out, Mourinho has been forced to rotate his squad which seems to be having an effect on the team’s results.
The matches against Burnley and Leipzig are must-wins if we need to get salvage anything from this season. Mabbutt recognizes this and is waiting eagerly for the exciting clashes.
“We’ve got big games coming up, one after the other. Some exciting games for us.”
the 58-year-old believes Spurs have a good shot at making the top four and should aim to do so. In spite of the difficulties, he believes Tottenham can take strength from last season’s heroics against Manchester City and Ajax Amsterdam to turn the Leipzig tie around.
“Fantastic time last year, hopefully we can do the same this year.”
