Daniel Levy makes admission about the summer transfer window

According to Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has admitted that the club’s transfer budget will be significantly affected should Spurs fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Jose Mourinho’s side have been unable to take advantage of Chelsea’s slip-ups. Tottenham were one point behind fourth spot going into the winter break. They now find themselves seven points off the Blues after failing to win the last three league games.

Although Spurs reinforced the squad by signing Steven Bergwijn and Gedson Fernandes in January, they have not been able to fill in for the numerous injuries that have plagued the key members of the squad.

The attack has been severely hit with both Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son out for large periods.

Levy met with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust last week and openly admitted to Mourinho’s war chest for the summer being dented by the team’s inability to qualify for Europe’s premier competition.

Expedience over Extravagance

The Spurs chairman does not believe that there is a direct correlation between winning and spending money. He went on to add that everything depended on making the right choices.

“Funds were ring-fenced for the summer, however not qualifying for the Champions League would have an impact all round.”

Levy was cryptic when asked if other clubs have been smarter in recruitment and went on to say that perceptions need not be factual and is also dependent on what a manager wishes to do.

Tottenham had a busy transfer window as they signed powerhouse French midfielder Tanguy Ndombele for a club-record fee. That was followed by the signings of Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso. The Argentine initially joined on loan before making the deal permanent in January.

The club was also active in the January window as we signed Steven Bergwijn and Gedson Fernandes (on a season-long loan).

Lo Celso and Bergwijn have gone on to become key players in the first-team while Fernandes has shown promise. Ndombele has admittedly struggled and there is hope that he can turn it around and do justice to his reputation.
