Jose Mourinho believes Ryan Sessegnon is ready to make a difference
Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Ryan Sessegnon could be set to start at left-back in the match against RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League. The 19-year-old has missed the last two games due to injury but is in contention for the trip to Germany.
Mourinho admitted that we will choose between the youngster and veteran Jan Vertonghen at left-back. He praised the youngster for his attacking prowess and indicated that he offers a better option going forward than fellow youth prospect Japhet Tanganga.
“Ryan can also give us options in attacking areas.”
Playing the youngster at left-back could mean that Tottenham go into the game with five at the back.
Sessegnon easily betters Vertonghen in the attacking department and also has the pace to trouble the Leipzig players. Julian Nagelsmann’s side will play with drive and energy and the lack of pace exhibited by Jan Vertonghen will make him ineffective going forward.
With Steven Bergwijn also injured, there is a drop in attacking prowess on the left-hand side that needs to be addressed. Sessegnon has played on the left flank for Fulham and scored 25 goals and 18 assists in an attacking role for his former club. An impressive stat considering he is still 19 years old.
Mourinho will look to channel this prowess against Leipzig as Tottenham has no other choice but to come out and attack. The boss also asserted that Sessegnon deserves a shot.
“I think it’s time for Ryan to get his opportunity.”

Sessegnon has played just 11 times for Tottenham since making the move last summer. Both of his goal contributions have come in the Champions League. Mourinho will hope that Sessegnon can repay the faith by putting up a show at the Red Bull Arena.
