Steven Bergwijn to miss Champions League trip to Leipzig
If Jose Mourinho had a task on his hands, it just got a whole lot harder as he lost yet another attacker to injury going into an important match.
Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn is the latest Tottenham player to be ruled out injured. He seemed to pick up a knock at the weekend against Burnley. He played the whole 90 minutes and appeared to be limping at full-time.
It was hoped that he would shake it off but unfortunately, everyone’s worst fears have now been confirmed. The club released a statement saying that the player suffered a sprain in his left ankle in the draw at Turf Moor.
No return date has been mentioned, with the club only revealing vaguely that the winger will undergo a lengthy rehabilitation process while his condition is assessed.
“The Netherlands international will now undergo an extended period of rehabilitation where his progress will continue to be assessed.”
The January signing has been a hit so far since making his debut against Manchester City. Predominantly playing on the left-wing, he has scored twice in seven games for the North Londoners.
Bergwijn had taken to playing a prominent role in the absence of Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min Son. His direct running and energy will be a huge miss against the Germans.
Unplanned emergency
Speaking to Football.London before the game, Mourinho replied that Bergwijn’s condition wasn’t helped by the fact that he had to play the whole match against Burnley rather than 50-60 minutes as planned.
“The plan was for Steven to play 55-60 minutes and then Lucas to come”
Spurs trailed courtesy of a Chris Wood goal and Mourinho was forced to restructure his side going into the second half. Bergwijn was a key component in the tactical reshuffle and played the whole game.
Mourinho intends for his players to give it their all against Leipzig and expects a performance irrespective of the result. He went on to add that irrespective of a player’s condition, the group at his disposal is strong enough and will go out and meet the Germans with everything they have got.
