Jose Mourinho unsure of Tottenham qualifying for the Champions League
According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has cast doubts on his squad’s ability to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Speaking to the press after watching his side crash out against Leipzig, Mourinho admitted that the squad’s problems are not going to disappear overnight.
“With the squad we have at the moment it is going to be very, very difficult”
Apart from crashing out of the competition, the North Londoners are also seven points off 4th-placed Chelsea with just nine games left to play in the season. All this points to the club missing out on Europe’s premier competition for the first time in five seasons.
Spurs have struggled without the goalscoring abilities of Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min Son. The pair contributed to 33 goals this season, just four less than the rest of the team combined. Mourinho’s job just got harder following the injury to January signing Steven Bergwijn, leaving the club on its bare bones upfront.
“Every team in the world would struggle with five or six of their most important players missing”
The boss admitted that the return of these players will strengthen the club for next season while also stressing on the need to improve in other areas.
He revealed that he had observed the errors that led to Leipzig’s first two goals. He also professed an understanding of why such mistakes were made by his team. Mourinho also admitted that it is not easy for his players to give their all on the pitch in spite of mentally motivating themselves to so so.
The Portuguese conceded that Leipzig were the better team and deserved to go through. He also extolled the virtues that made them such a good outfit, while also compared the Germans’ options on the bench to the lack of it on his.
“All the players on the Leipzig bench would all play at this moment in my team.”
