Tottenham Hotspur could be offered Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic
According to The Mirror, Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic could be offered to both Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea following his non-compliance with strict orders to be quarantined.
The Real Madrid team was ordered to go into self-isolation after a member of their basketball team tested positive for Covid-19. The 22-year-old made the poorly thought out decision to fly home to Serbia before curbs were lifted. He has since apologized for his transgression.
Spain is one of the countries worst hit by the virus and has suffered more than 1300 deaths. The Serbian’s inability to follow protocol has not gone down well in Madrid.
With the very public ire expressed at the player’s actions, Real Madrid could offer the striker to both Tottenham and Chelsea. The London duo was previously linked with a move for the player.
Although Madrid gave the player permission to fly home, the club was left unimpressed that the player ignored rules put in place by Serbia for those returning from infected countries.
Jovic’s action was openly condemned by Serbia’s Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and President Aleksander Vucic. While Brnabic was critical of the player’s inability to show public consciousness, Vicoc went as far as to threaten Jovic with arrest if he left his apartment.
“We have the negative example of our football stars who earn millions and have ignored the obligation to self-isolate.”
In his defense, Jovic claimed that he had tested negative for the virus in both Serbia and Spain. Although he has apologized for putting others in danger, he did seem to pass the buck regarding the decision to travel in the first place.
Our verdict!
Jovic has failed to hit the ground running and has struggled to impress at the Santiago Bernebeu. He has scored just two goals and two assists in 24 games and has failed to show that he can be the heir to Karim Benzema.
The French star will turn 33 this year and the fact that Madrid are willing to cut loose Jovic rather than mould him as the Frenchman’s successor does not sit well with us.
The Serbian’s talent is obvious but his recent actions stink of irresponsibility. He had earlier been accused of indiscipline by his international manager earlier this year.
