Barcelona keen on signing Spurs star Tanguy Ndombele
According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (h/t Express), Barcelona are keen on a shock transfer of under-fire Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.
The 23-year-old is Spurs’ record signing but has failed to live up to his price tag in a season plagued by injuries. He has scored just two goals and four assists in 27 games and has also drawn public criticism from Jose Mourinho.
Barcelona boss Quique Setien is an admirer of the player and sees him as the ideal replacement for Arturo Vidal and Ivan Rakitic.
Both the Catalan players 32 and are in the twilight of their careers. Setien is on the lookout for a replacement ‘with legs’ and sees the Frenchman as the ideal target. Only 23, Ndombele could prove to be a long-term addition to a rapidly ageing Barcelona midfield. The Catalans are expected to make a move in the summer transfer window.
Barcelona’s interest in the player isn’t new. They kept tabs on him last summer before deciding against making a move. Ndombele then ended up moving to the Champions League runners-up for £54million.
Taking advantage of other’s misfortune
The Blaugrana is hoping to take advantage of the public criticism meted out to the player by Mourinho. The Spurs boss did not hold back in his assessment of the player’s performance in the 1-1 draw with Burnley this month. He spent the next match on the bench before the season as suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.
To keep or not to keep!
It is fair to say that Ndombele has flattered to impress at Tottenham. Much was expected of the player and he has largely failed to produce when needed.
It is true that his injuries have not helped, but he has failed to look convincing otherwise as well. A supremely athletic and talented player, his quality is never in doubt. With the season on a break, it remains to be seen if he can condition himself to improve his fitness to suit the rigours of the English game.
He should be given another season to prove himself. A star at Lyon, there is no reason why he cannot go on to become a key player at Spurs.
