Jose Mourinho fined by UEFA for delaying kickoff against RB Leipzig
According to the Evening Standard, UEFA have fined Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho £17,714 for delaying the kickoff against RB Leipzig in the Champions League tie at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Our opponents on the night were not exempt from being fined either. The Germans were fined £1,992 for the throwing of objects during the match in London.
Spurs are not alone in being reprimanded by the governing organization. Other English clubs including Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Wolverhampton Wanderers also received fines from UEFA.
The fine was the least of the problems on the night as we suffered a 1-0 lead in the first leg tie.
The second leg in Germany was not short of issues either. RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann was held responsible for the late kick-off in the reverse fixture on March 10.
The Germans won 3-0 on the night to advance 4-0 on aggregate but got off with only a warning. It is unsure why Mourinho got fined while Nagelsmann got away with a slap on the wrist.
The successive defeats brought to an end our tryst with this season’s competition. It was an anti-climatic end to the same trophy that we came so close to securing last year.
Our opponents on the night, Liverpool also crashed out after throwing away the lead in extra time to Atletico Madrid at Anfield. The Reds, however, are on course to win the Premier League title.
Spurs face an uphill task to qualify for next season’s Champions League. We are currently seven points off the final Champions League spot with nine games left to play.
