Tottenham looking to sign Chelsea star Olivier Giroud on free transfer
Tottenham Hotspur are planning to sign Chelsea and France striker Olivier Giroud, who is out of contract at the end of the season, reports TEAMtalk (h/t Football.London).
Giroud has been with Chelsea since January 2018, having signed from our arch rivals Arsenal. The 33-year-old had been a key squad member, but found himself out of the first-team picture this season under Frank Lampard.
However, Tammy Abraham’s injury and Michy Batshuayi’s struggles meant that the Frenchman did make his way back into the lineup. Prior to the season getting suspended, Giroud had made 13 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea, scoring three goals – one of which came against us in February.
Giroud may have forced his way back into Lampard’s plans, but his future remains a subject of speculation. The 33-year-old will be a free agent at the end of the season with his contract running out, putting a number of clubs on alert, including Tottenham (h/t Football.London).
It is no secret that we need a new backup striker for our star man Harry Kane heading into the next season. Having allowed Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen leave last summer without bringing in a replacement has come back to haunt us.
Injuries to Kane, Son Heung-Min and January signing Steven Bergwijn left us to bare bones in the attacking department. And we cannot afford to go into the next season with the same situation.

To that end, the interest in Giroud makes sense. The 33-year-old would be happy to play backup to Kane and has loads of top level experience behind him. His history with our bitter rivals might make the possibility of a transfer difficult, however.
Giroud is not the only Chelsea player we have been linked to. Willian is another Blues’ player that will be out of contract in the summer and has been linked with a switch to Tottenham (h/t Football.London).
