Tottenham Hotspur keen on Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana
According to Spanish publication Sport (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing Ajax shot-stopper Andre Onana.
Any attempt by us to do so will involve us besting Barcelona who are also interested in the 24-year-old (h/t Football.London).
The Cameroonian joined the Dutch giants in 2016 and is now a key member of the squad. He has made 174 appearances for de Godenzonen and has kept an impressive 74 clean sheets. Onana also played every minute of Ajax’s incredible run to the semi-finals of the Champions League last season. A run that was ended by us.
The player is seeking a new challenge and is on the lookout for a transfer. He had earlier expressed his wish to play in England, which could work out in our favour. (h/t BBC)
His contract runs until 2022 and Ajax are open to offers. Apart from Chelsea, no other English club at the moment are in need of a goalkeeper which will lessen competition for him from our domestic rivals.
Hugo Lloris has been one of the club’s best players over the last decade. He has held the fort as our last line of defense numerous times. At the age of 33, he is entering his twilight and is in need of replacing.
Although he is still capable of producing a masterclass on his day, he has made a number of errors this season. We have the joint least clean sheets in the Premier League and are in need of a keeper to take us into the new decade.
Barcelona are likely to pose the biggest threat to our hopes of signing him. Onana had spent five years at the Catalan outfit’s academy before making the move to the Netherlands. (h/t Football.London)
One advantage we have over them is playing time. Marc-Andre ter Stegen is the undisputed number one at Camp Nou and is one of the best players in the world.
It is likely that Onana will have to play backup to the German while he could have a clearer run at the number one spot in North London.

Onana has proven himself as a dependable player in the Eredivisie. The 2018 Cameroonian Player of the Year also made the CAF Team of the year in 2019. Whether his future lies at Tottenham or not remains to be seen.
