Tottenham Hotspur have used least number of players in the last five years

According to the CIES Football Observatory, Tottenham Hotspur has had the lowest turnover of players used per team among the Premier League sides in the last five years.

Spurs have used only 51 players during this time, a tally that is a little more than half of Sheffield United, who are top at 92. Incidentally, defending Premier League champions Manchester City are just above us with 52 players. (h/t CIES)

Considering our lack of transfers, it is no surprise that we are bottom of the list.

Other London-based clubs in the top ten in England include Arsenal in third with 56 players and Crystal Palace in seventh with 62 players. Not Surprisingly, West Ham United have used 72 players and are in fifth spot.

The highest in the world was by Colombian side of Deportivo Pasto with an incredible 176 different players, while the lowest one was measured for Shanghai SIPG in China, who used 44 players. The South American-Europe debate rages once again, with the former occupying top spots for most players used, while the European teams tend to use a lesser number.

It was observed that the richest clubs are not necessarily the ones who fielded the most players. On the contrary, the opposite was observed.

Tottenham came eighth in the Deloitte Money League in 2020, yet we have used lesser players than the seven other teams ahead of us. Our numbers are closer to that of Athletic Bilbao, who are famous for using only Basque based players. They are bottom of the Spanish list with 50.

The lower numbers seen by the bigger clubs quite possible points to the adage that quality is better than quantity.

Our lack of transfer incomings had been a constant source of irritation for former manager Mauricio Pochettino. Although naysayers can argue that City have done much better than us, having used just a player more, they have consistently sought to sign players of a very high level.

Although our players have done well, it is required to freshen up the squad from time to time to maintain the spirit and morale. The Premier League came 18th in the average number of players fielded per season since 2015 with 25.20.
