Tottenham Hotspur put off by Gareth Bale wage demands
According to Spanish publication Sport (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur have withdrawn their interest in re-signing former attacking sensation Gareth Bale in the summer transfer window.
The Welshman enjoyed six fruitful seasons in North London. He initially started off as a left-back with a knack of scoring from set-pieces. It was when he was pushed up onto the wing that his talent really shone through.
Freed from the shackles of defensive responsibilities, Bale wreaked havoc in the opposition half with his direct runs and clinical strikes. He went on to score 56 goals and 58 assists for Spurs. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Although 30 now, he is still a potent player and would have been an excellent addition to our attack.
Show me the money!
The bone of contention is the player’s wages. According to the report, Spurs are worried that he will ask for too much money. Given the uncertainty regarding our finances amidst the shutdown, it does not make sense for us to offer obscene wages to players regardless of their past loyalties.
Spurs have over £700million to repay in both stadium loans and outstanding transfer fees, without having to add Bale’s salary into the mix.
Bale is currently out of favour at Real and the Spaniards are keen to move him on. Apart from us, even Manchester United were keen on the player, only for them to withdraw their interest due to his salary demands. Soon to be 31, Bale is unlikely to lower his demands, making a deal with Spurs highly improbable.
