AS Roma target soon-to-be free agent Jan Vertonghen
Serie A giants AS Roma are keen on Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen, according to the Daily Mail (h/t Sun).
Vertonghen is a free agent at the end of the season and has had his ups and downs this season. The 32-year-old centre-back has played 26 times for us this season but has been in and out of the side throughout the season.
The report adds that Chris Smalling is set to return to Manchester United at the end of the season. Smalling joined Roma on a season-long loan and wants to remain at the club (h/t Sun).
Talks were also going well over a deal, however, it seems that the Englishman will be back in the red of United next season (h/t Sun).
Vertonghen isn’t the only free agent that Roma are tracking. The report adds that Chelsea winger Pedro is also a target and the Serie A giants will move for him next season too.
Time up for Vertonghen?
The Belgian and his fellow countryman, Toby Alderweireld, were both in the final year of their respective deals.
However, Alderweireld was handed a new deal (h/t Tottenham Hotspur) while Vertonghen is yet to be given one. The 32-year-old has put up some great shows for Spurs over the years, but it might be time to call it a day in London.
Jose Mourinho has seen the rise of Japhet Tanganga in recent weeks and with Davinson Sanchez also in the team, we have a couple of options to partner Alderweireld.
Tanganga was also played in a back three, which worked in a few games. The 21-year-old has a lot of potential to grow, and it will be interesting to see how he does once the season returns.
Losing Vertonghen would be a blow in terms of experience as the Belgian has several Premier League campaigns under him.
