Former Spurs man Luis Binks reveals Mourinho’s efforts to stop his exit

Tottenham academy graduate Luis Binks, who left the club in February, has revealed that Jose Mourinho tried to persuade him to stay at the club, in a recent interview with the Daily Mail.

The 18-year-old had been part of the Tottenham youth setup for a number of years and was held in the highest of regards within the club. The teenage centre-back has been likened to former Chelsea captain John Terry (h/t Daily Mail).

However, having made just 14 appearances for our U23 side, Binks decided to leave the club in February, signing for MLS team Montreal Impact, managed by Thierry Henry.

Speaking to Daily Mail, the teenager has now revealed that our first-team boss Jose Mourinho tried to convince him to stay put at the club.

“He said how much he liked me, that I would be going on pre-season and, if I did well, I could play a few games next year.”

However, that was not enough for Binks to stay at the club, as he was intent on securing first-team football, having seen the likes of Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood achieve success at their respective clubs in recent years (h/t Daily Mail).

Since joining Montreal Impact, Binks has made four appearances for the MLS side. Opening up on his debut for the Canadian outfit, the defender claimed that playing in front of 30,000 people in a packed stadium was a huge motivating factor for him (h/t Daily Mail).

This was not possible at Tottenham where he used to play only in front of 50 people watching the reserves’ matches (h/t Daily Mail).

Binks had showcased potential throughout his youth career. And had he bided time, he would have broken into the first-team at Tottenham, especially given our defensive issues this term. Nevertheless, let’s wish the youngster the best for his MLS adventure.
