Vincent Janssen reveals reason behind Tottenham struggle
Dutch striker Vincent Janssen seems to have found his mojo for Monterrey in the Mexican league.
However, he came amidst a lot of fanfare from AZ Alkmaar for a price of £17m in 2016 (h/t Football.london).
Janssen was the top scorer in the Dutch league and great things were expected from him. However, the Dutchman failed to light it up at Tottenham and managed to score just six goals from 39 appearances in his debut season.
Janssen had one season on loan at Fenerbahce, but that didn’t work out for him either. His last season at Spurs was spent more in the medical room than the pitch, and the Dutchman has opened up about his time here.
The 25-year-old was speaking to VTBL (h/t Football.london) and says he was excited when he first came to Spurs:
“It was not the period I was hoping for at Tottenham. As a 22 year old boy from AZ this was a great step, but I didn’t make the minutes there that I expected.
“Also I did not reach my level there. Ultimately you want to play again, be a footballer and be appreciated.”
Janssen highlighted the lack of minutes in his first season and the final one where he was injured a lot. It was always going to be difficult to sit behind Harry Kane in the pecking order, but now he seems to be enjoying his football.
Mexican league better than the Dutch
Janssen also became a champion with Monterrey last December, and the striker added that he has had some great moments in the country. The 25-year-old further made a huge claim that the Mexican league is better than the one at home:
“It was my first championship, and to become that in Mexico after five months was something special.
“The Mexican league is very good and the level is just very high. It’s better than the [Eredivisie]. That’s my opinion.”
Janssen highlighted that he is one of the few European players there too, but he wasn’t complaining about the quality in Mexico. While he couldn’t do much at Tottenham, it is great that Janssen is back to scoring goals at another club.
