Tottenham Hotspur could offer new deal to Eric Dier
According to Football Insider (h/t Football.london), Eric Dier could be set to extend his stay at Tottenham Hotspur. The club are ready to open negotiations involving a new contract.
The Englishman’s contract at the club was set to expire in 2021. The initial expectation was that Spurs would be willing to listen to offers. That doesn’t appear to be the case anymore.
Dier has endured a difficult season where he has struggled for both form and fitness. He has however experienced an upturn in form since the winter break and has put in a some fine performances at the heart of the defence.
Primarily employed as a defensive midfielder under Mauricio Pochettino he is also capable of playing at center-back. That is exactly where Jose Mourinho believes the player’s future lies as he tries to fit him into the team (h/t Football.london).
Spurs are keen to not let the issue drag out as it did with Christian Eriksen. They intend to put the matter to rest quickly and without any complications (h/t Football.london).
With the coronavirus pandemic wreaking havoc on football finances, there is a lack of clarity as to how much money will be available to spend in the transfer market.
Mixed fortunes
An important player for both club and country, Dier’s star has fallen in the last 18 months. A fresh start at centre-back could be the new beginning he desires as he aims to rebuild his career in North London.
Spurs have struggled to maintain defensive solidity in a thoroughly un-Mourinho like trait. The solution to that problem could already be at the club in Dier.
The 26-tear-old believes centre-back to be his best position and has performed admirably when called upon to do so.

Dier is facing a charge by the FA for misconduct for his actions after the FA Cup tie against Norwich last month. The 26-year-old had barged into the crowd to confront a fan.
Ironically, it came on the back of one of his finest performances for the club as a central defender.
