Steven Bergwijn opens up on debut Tottenham goal against Manchester City

Steven Bergwijn made a huge impact on his debut match for Tottenham. The Dutch international signed for Spurs in the January window in a £27m deal from PSV. And his debut came against Manchester City.

Facing Pep Guardiola’s side is always a daunting task, especially when you have just come to a new team in a new country.

However, Bergwijn was one of our more impressive performers on that day. We won the match 2-0 and during an interview with former club PSV, the Dutchman explained what went through his mind after the goal (h/t Football-Oranje):

“It is not even understandable. You might also see in my face that I didn’t really know what to do. I went from side to side. It was just like a dream.”

Ready to make a mark

Bergwijn also highlighted that it was Jose Mourinho asked him if he wanted to play against City. The gaffer questioned if the Dutchman was ready to play, and the answer was in the affirmative.

Moving to a new team is always difficult but Bergwijn has already made some friends in London.

Bergwijn was happy to have some Dutch-speaking stars at the club and also clicked with some first-teamers (h/t Football-Oranje).

“It just clicked immediately, anyway with those Dutch-speaking boys and also with Dele Alli, Son and Sessegnon.”

Bergwijn made five Premier League appearances for us before the season was halted. His tally of two goals is just the foundation and there should be more to come from the 22-year-old.

The Dutchman is versatile enough to play in any position up top and has put in some impressive performances already.

However, we should see the real Bergwijn after he gets a proper pre-season under his belt. Moving in the winter window doesn’t always work, but the 22-year-old has done well.

Lucas Moura also joined us in the winter window from PSG. His first six months weren’t great but he came into his own after a full-preseason in the following campaign.
