Jose Mourinho keen to sign Thomas Meunier
According to ESPN (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has called Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier to convince him to move to North London.
The Belgian defender’s contract at the Parc des Princes is due to expire this summer, making him available for a transfer on a free.
Meunier is keen on remaining with the Ligue 1 giants but PSG hasn’t opened negotiations with the Belgian international (h/t Daily Star).
The 28-year-old has been at the club since 2016 following his move from Club Brugge. Capable of playing anywhere along the right flank, Meunier has made 128 appearances for the Parisians while scoring 13 goals and 21 assists.
An experienced defender, Meunier has enjoyed a trophy-laden stay in Paris. A regular for the Belgian national side, he will be bringing in a wealth of experience to Tottenham.
A tale of woe at right-back!
Right-back is a position that Spurs are keen to strengthen given our lack of a reliable option. Serge Aurier is a ticking time bomb while Kyle Walker-Peters and Danny Rose look to be on their way out.
The Ivorian international did not help his cause with his activities off the pitch. He was warned by the club for failing to comply with the social distancing norms for the second time this week.
Aurier has been a mainstay in the Spurs XI since Mourinho took over. However, that is hardly a surprise given our lack of options in the position.
Meunier being a free transfer will also be a selling factor for Daniel Levy. The coronavirus pandemic has affected almost every sports team across the globe. Levy has spoken about needing to keep a check on the finances of the club due to the virus.

Meunier is a solid defender in his own right and is capable of holding his own. He is any day a more reliable defender than Aurier and is not prone to the Ivorian international’s lack of focus.
We will be hard-pressed to find another right-back of the Belgian’s caliber on a free this window.
