Hugo Lloris spoke on the perils of players returning to action soon
Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris has warned football’s governing bodies that players need time to tune their bodies back before the season resumes.
The English leagues have been suspended for close to a month due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the Premier League and English Football League are keen on resuming their competitions to avoid a financial catastrophe (h/t Sun).
The government also hopes to resume the leagues in a few weeks (h/t Sun), however, Lloris believes players need time to get back to their best. Speaking to Le Parisian, Lloris compared footballers to F1 cars (h/t Sun):
“The sportsman is a machine comparable in some ways to an F1 car — everything is fine-tuned.
“You have to pay attention when you restart the engine. When we do restart, athletes will need time to get back into shape for the final sprint.
“At the moment we’re just keeping in shape — but we’re very far away from our top physical condition.”
Lloris added that it might take a long time for things to return to normal. Our captain also said that there would be a psychological toll on people after so many deaths but wanted everyone to unite and rise above from this tough situation.
Spurs doing their bit to keep fit
Tottenham provided specific training regimes to all the players once the lockdown was announced. Recently, the players started having group training sessions but this was done via video conferencing.
Lloris is right in suggesting that players need more time to tune their bodies. The campaign normally features a month-long pre-season camp before the real action begins.
It will be interesting to see when football can resume in the UK. The Bundesliga have already pressed ahead with plans and expect to hold matches in May.
However, that will only restart once a go-ahead has been given by the German government (h/t Guardian).
