Jose Mourinho compares Ryan Sessegnon to Ashley Cole
Football.london’s Alasdair Gold took part in a recent Q+A session and revealed that Jose Mourinho compared Ryan Sessegnon with Ashley Cole.
The Tottenham correspondent spoke about some of our possible plans in the transfer window and provided his opinion on us buying a left-back too.
Gold claimed that it was unlikely we would sign someone for this position. Ben Davies is someone who Jose Mourinho likes, according to Gold, and the boss even made a huge claim regarding one youngster (h/t Football.london):
“Mourinho is a big fan of Ben Davies, who fits his system perfectly and he believes Ryan Sessegnon has the skill-set to be a top left-back one day.
“The Portuguese told me soon after joining that Sessegnon reminds him of a young Ashley Cole which is high praise for the teenager.”
Gold is right in saying that it is high praise for the England youth international. Sessegnon’s first season with us has been hampered by injuries, but he did get a few matches before the season was halted.
Tons of potential to improve
Sessegnon was one of Fulham’s best players before they went down. He couldn’t shine much in his Premier League campaign with the Cottagers but still contributed to their season.
The English youngster can play either as a left-back or as a left-winger, and it seems that Mourinho sees him more as a defender than an attacker.
Cole, for his part, joined Chelsea from Arsenal. However, the 39-year-old won league titles with both the Gunners and the Blues.
He was also England Player of the Year in 2010, was in the PFA Team of the Year four times and was in UEFA’s team of the year twice.
Sessegnon has a long way to go before he can emulate some of the great work done by Cole. However, he has the perfect manager to grow and develop under.
