Harry Kane surprised former England striker Colin Grainger with a video call
According to the Yorkshire Post, Tottenham Hotspur striking sensation Harry Kane surprised former England star Colin Grainger with a video call.
The 86-year-old Grainger, who played for Sheffield United and Sunderland, famously scored with his first touch on his England debut. He later scored twice in a 4-2 win over Brazil in May 1956.
Kane too enjoyed a spectacular start to his international career as he scored 79 minutes into his debut against Lithuania in 2015. He ended up connecting with the veteran earlier this week.
With the coronavirus pandemic wreaking havoc, Grainger has been isolating at home. This has forced him to stay away from his family in the last few weeks. He is, however, taken care of by care workers to whom he has expressed his gratitude.
It is difficult to stay away from one’s family during this tough time, especially on someone as old as Grainger. To recall happier days with the current England captain would have brightened up his day. He revealed that he remembers the goals he scored in an England shirt, with the brace against Brazil taking the cherry.
“I’ve got some good memories, but my favorite memory is my two goals against Brazil, that’s the one.”
Kane joined in and revealed that it is a special moment to make one’s national team debut. It is a moment that sticks. Given Grainer still remembers vivid moments that occurred more than half a century ago, one can only imagine the pride he felt at having achieved them.
Nicknamed the “singing winger”, he also had a music career and once shared a stage with The Beatles.

The lockdown has been extremely hard, especially on the elderly. It was good of Kane to check in on the veteran, who did his part for the national side. As the England captain, recognizing his deeds is the least our ace can do.
