Tim Sherwood claims Harry Kane would have left Tottenham if not for him

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has claimed that star striker Harry Kane would have left the club if he was not the manager back in 2013. (h/t Express)

Kane is a product of the Tottenham academy. While he made his first-team debut in 2011 under Harry Redknapp, it wasn’t until Sherwood took charge that he got a regular run in the first-team.

Sherwood was appointed Tottenham manager in December 2013, following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas. The Englishman lasted at the club for just six months as he was replaced by Mauricio Pochettino.

It was during his tenure that Kane made his full Premier League debut, in a game against Sunderland, in which he scored. The 26-year-old went on to make 18 appearances under Sherwood, scoring four goals and setting up six more.

Speaking on the Squeaky Bum Time Podcast (h/t Express), Sherwood has now claimed that the club would have sold the current England time if he was not in charge at the club.

“I don’t think Harry Kane would be at Tottenham if I wasn’t there as manager. They were looking to offload Harry Kane, perhaps because he’d been out on a few loans. And there were a lot of people around the club at the time maybe suggesting that he wasn’t going to be a player of Premier League quality.”

Sherwood further added that Kane’s character and mentality stood out from a very young age. (h/t Express)

We don’t know how true the former manager’s claims are. But if Spurs did, at that point, consider selling Kane, it would have proved to be one of the disastrous transfer decisions in the history of the club.

The 26-year-old has grown into one of the most lethal marksmen in the game and has been slaying defences for over five years now. With 181 goals, he is now third in the list of our club’s all-time leading goalscorers.
