Real Betis enter fray for Jan Vertonghen
According to the Daily Star, Real Betis are the latest side to enter the race for Belgian international defender Jan Vertonghen.
With his contract set to expire at end of his season, the 33-year-old has no shortage of suitors. Valencia too are keen on the player while Inter Milan and Roma are also keen to take him on.
Vertonghen is widely expected to leave when his contract expires. Spurs are already scouring the market for a replacement.
An extremely experienced defender, the Belgian has over 500 first-team appearances spread across his career. He initially made a name for himself in Holland before taking it a notch up in North London.
Now after eight years, he looks set to move on. According to the report, Betis have offered the 33-year-old a two-year contract after holding talks with his representatives.
The Spaniards have watched the Belgian play this season. They believe he still has much to offer despite his age. Vertonghen had earlier revealed that La Liga is a league that appeals to him.
Vertonghen has not yet made a decision regarding his future. He has made just 18 appearances this season as he has fallen down the pecking order at the club.
The player is aware of the power he holds as a free agent in the current market. He will be due a big signing-on fee as a free agent if he chooses to leave this summer.
However, with the season still in progress, he is in no hurry to make a decision. His relationship with Jose Mourinho has been rocky and this could play a factor in him leaving.
Spurs have done business with the Spaniards in the last two windows. Giovani Lo Celso was taken on loan last summer before being signed permanently in January. (h/t BBC)
