Michael Brown backs Jan Vertonghen to snub Tottenham contract extension
According to Football Insider (h/t Express), former Tottenham Hotspur star Michael Brown has backed Jan Vertonghen to snub a short-term extension to stay until the end of the season.
The Belgian is out of contract at the end of the season. The club has the option to extend his stay until the end of the season. However, this also depends on the player giving his consent.
Brown believes Vertonghen will be reluctant to sanction such an extension.
“I think there may be players like him who are reluctant”
The 33-year-old has been a loyal servant to the club for eight years now. He has since made over 300 appearances for the North London club since arriving from Ajax in 2012.
However, the defender has fallen down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho. He has made just 18 appearances this season and has struggled to make his usual impact on the pitch.
The player is aware of the power he holds as a free agent in the current market. He will be due a big signing-on fee as a free agent if he chooses to leave this summer.
Vertonghen seems keen to leverage his position as a free agent to get the deal that suits him. Given the number of excellent performances he has put in for us, it won’t be fair to begrudge him for choosing what suits him best.
