Paul Robinson backs Jose Mourinho to sign Philippe Coutinho
According to Football Insider (h/t Football.london), former Tottenham Hotspur star Paul Robinson has backed Jose Mourinho to sign Barcelona outcast Philippe Coutinho.
“I think he would be a great signing for Spurs. I do not think he has settled since leaving the country and he is clearly a player that suits the Premier League.”
The Brazilian international has struggled to make an impact since leaving Liverpool for sunny Catalunya in 2018. His performances have been so underwhelming that in spite of being the club’s record signing, Barcelona sent the player away to loan at Bayern Munich.
The Bundesliga giants have decided not to sign the 27-year-old permanently, leaving his future open to interpretation.
A number of Premier League clubs have been linked with a move for Coutinho, with Tottenham Hotspur being one among them.
“The market will take a hit but there will still be movement of players. I can still see the Coutinho deal being done.”
The X-factor
The Tottenham midfield has lacked imagination at times this season. If the club does decide to pursue Coutinho, they will be getting a player who is adept at opening up defences and threading through balls.
He is also a proven quantity in England, having shone for years at Liverpool. A match-winner for the Merseysiders, he has made 201 appearances while scoring 54 goals and 45 assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Price an issue?
In spite of his troubles at Barcelona, it is difficult to imagine Barcelona let the player go on the cheap given the substantial investment they made just over two years ago.
With the club currently starved for cash, a loan deal would make sense for both the player and the club. Not only will Spurs add creativity in the midfield, but also give Coutinho a chance to resurrect his career in a league he has set alight before.

There is no doubt that the player’s star has fallen in recent years. However, he still remains someone capable of the sublime and would be a worthy addition to the Spurs squad.
