Southampton could be forced to sell key duo amidst Tottenham interest
According to the Mirror (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur have been given a boost in their pursuit of Southampton skipper Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and star striker Danny Ings.
The Dane has grown in stature since joining the Saints in 2016. Made the skipper by Ralph Hasenhuttl, he has taken his performances up a notch.
Capable of playing a variety of roles, Hojbjerg is a dynamic player who can add a lot to the Spurs midfield. At just 24, he is yet to hit his peak. The Dane also has considerable experience of playing in England with 129 appearances for the Saints. (h/t Transfermarkt)
The COVID-19 pandemic has spread panic in the football world with no club immune to its after aftereffects. Southampton are no exception and could be forced to sell their stars to balance their books, with one of them Hojbjerg.
Tottenham have at times lacked calmness and leadership in the middle of the park. The 24-year-old Dane can change that given his ability to galvanize those around him.
The fate of Spurs defender Kyle Walker-Peters could be tied into a deal for the Danish midfielder. Currently on loan at Southampton, he could be used as a makeweight in any transfer discussions.
The player had earlier admitted that he wants to move to a higher level. Reliable journalist Alasdair Gold has earlier added that playing for Jose Mourinho is something that would appeal to the midfielder. (h/t Football.london)
The perfect backup striker
Ings, on the other hand, would be an excellent backup for Harry Kane. The Englishman has scored 15 goals for the Saints since making the switch from Liverpool last summer. A tricky customer who is good on the ball, there are few backup strikers who can do better.
At 27, Ings has a number of years left in him and can be a shrewd signing for Tottenham. A player with a never say die attitude, Mourinho will relish having him at his disposal.
