Tottenham Hotspur target Kalidou Koulibaly too expensive
According to the Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a setback in their pursuit of Serie A superstar Kalidou Koulibaly.
One of the best defenders in world football, Koulibaly is not short of suitors. His addition would have immeasurably strengthened our backline that has been too porous of late.
The major obstacle has always been the asking price of £100m. Clubs scouting the Senegalese star were hopeful that the financial crisis would work in their favor. It now appears that the belief was misplaced. (h/t Daily Star)
Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli is adamant that the Senegalese star will not leave for anything less than his full valuation. (h/t Daily Star)
“A player like this cannot change his value even in a crisis, so we are not moving our valuation.”
Competition for the defender is high with the likes of Manchester United, Everton, and PSG are also in hot pursuit. If a club does pay the amount, it will be the third time in three years that the record for the most expensive defender is smashed. (h/t Daily Star)
With his contract running until 2023, Napoli hold all the aces when it comes to negotiations. Such a hefty fee is not without its risks. Koulibaly will turn 29 this month, meaning his longevity is a matter of concern.
There is no doubt he would walk straight into our starting lineup. The defence is an area that requires reinforcement and who best than one of the best in the business.
Unfortunately, it is way beyond our capabilities. Also investing such an amount on one position is a luxury we cannot partake of, given the deficiencies all across our rearguard.

Spurs will have to recruit smartly rather than throw money at their problems in the upcoming window. If Koulibaly is the answer, then the question needs to be changed. Spurs are better off looking elsewhere.
