Barcelona willing to cover portion of Tottenham target Philippe Coutinho’s wages
According to a report from The Telegraph, Barcelona are prepared to cover a portion of the wages of Philippe Coutinho in order to force him out of the club this summer. The Brazilian midfielder is a target for Tottenham Hotspur, among other Premier League clubs.
Coutinho joined Barcelona from Liverpool in a big-money deal back in January 2018, but has struggled to adapt to life at Camp Nou. After an underwhelming eighteen months, the Catalans loaned him out to Bayern Munich last summer, where he has fared recently.
However, Bayern are not willing to exercise the option of making the 28-year-old’s transfer permanent. With Barcelona also not wanting the Brazilian, his future has become a quandary. There has been a flurry of interest in him from the Premier League, with Tottenham among the parties interested. (h/t Daily Mail)
As per the report, Barcelona are open to allowing him leave on loan once again or will offload him in a permanent transfer or a swap deal would work as well.
The Catalans understand that given the current financial climes due to the coronavirus, clubs may not be able to afford his £200,000-a-week wages. Hence, they are willing to cover a portion of the wages, in order to ease the burden on any suitors, while getting rid of a player that is not needed. (h/t The Telegraph)
This could come as a boost for Tottenham. While Coutinho’s form may have been on the wane since he moved to Barcelona, he is still a quality player with his best years ahead of him. With 9 goals and 8 assists in 32 matches for Bayern Munich, the Brazilian has shown he is still a potent player.
