Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino in talks to sign for Benfica
According to a report from Portuguese publication Record (h/t The Sun), Benfica are in talks with former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino for the managerial position at the club.
Pochettino has been without a job since he was sacked by Tottenham in November last year after a disastrous start to the 2019/20 campaign. There has been plenty of interest in the Argentine’s services, whose gardening leave came to an end last month.
Newcastle United have earmarked Pochettino as their top managerial candidate post takeover. And now, Benfica are also eyeing the former Spurs boss. The Portuguese giants are ready to axe current manager Bruno Lage just after eighteen months in order to make room for Poch.(h/t The Sun)
The report also adds that Pochettino himself is open the such a possibility and is in talks with the Portuguese heavyweights over the possibility of taking over the reins.
Pochettino enjoyed five successful years at Tottenham. Having been appointed in 2014, the Argentine turned us into genuine challengers for the title as well as regulars in the UEFA Champions League. However, we did not win any trophies during his time in charge. The closest we came was the final of the Champions League last season.
Reports of Pochettino’s potential appointment at Benfica got the Tottenham fans talking on social media. And here are some of the reactions to the news.

He deserves so much better than that. He should get the juve job when Sarri gets sacked

He would be crazy to manage Benfica. It’s a great club with an amazing history but the Portuguese league is so weak. He should hold out for a job in one of Europe’s top leagues.

This is a smarter move than Newcastle. United spot looks like it might be occupied beyond the summer. Maybe City if Pep goes back to Barcelona.
Go to Portugal and get some trophies and learn the feeling then come back to Spurs in two years. 👍🏼
