Tottenham hold talks to sign Wigan Athletic starlet Alfie Devine

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur have held talks with Championship club Wigan Athletic over the possibility of signing 15-year-old midfielder Alfie Devine.

The 15-year-old Devine was released from the Liverpool youth academy last year. Following that, he linked with the Wigan youth setup. In his first year with Latics, the midfielder has made rapid strides, starring for them in the FA Youth Cup with the U-18 team. His form prompted Wigan to fast-track Devine into the U-23 side.

A central midfielder by trade, Devine can also operate in the No. 6 role. The 15-year-old broke into the England U-16 national team towards the end of last year as well. He featured in a couple of friendlies against Spain and Japan.

Devine made a substitute appearance in Wigan’s 2-0 win over Spurs’ U-18 side in the FA Youth Cup. And now, the club are reportedly interested in buying him this summer. To that end, negotiations over a deal worth £500,000 are already underway.

Wigan have been placed into administration. Due to this, they will have to sell some players this summer. A number of clubs, including Tottenham, are looking to take advantage of the situation.(h/t Daily Mail)

Devine is not the only Wigan Athletic youngster Tottenham have expressed an interest in. The club had been recently linked with moves for striker Joe Gelhardt and midfielder Jensen Weir.

It increasingly looks like we will be coming in second in our pursuit of both Gelhardt and Weir though, with Leicester City closing in on the former, while the latter is set to join Brighton & Hove Albion.

Hopefully, we are able to close the deal for Devine in the coming days.
