Manchester City interested in signing Jan Vertonghen
According to a report from The Telegraph, outgoing Premier League champions Manchester City are keen on signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen this summer.
Vertonghen has been with Tottenham since 2012, having arrived from Dutch giants Ajax. During his time at the club, the Belgian has grown into one of the best defenders in the Premier League. However, at 33, he has shown signs of slowing down this season.
Vertonghen’s contract with Tottenham was set to expire last month. However, he agreed a short-term extension to see out the 2019/20 campaign. But with his future still up in the air, a number of clubs are lining up to sign him on a free transfer once the season ends, with Manchester City also joining the queue now. (h/t The Telegraph)
The Cityzens, who lost out to Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title, are eyeing defensive reinforcements heading into the next season. Having lost captain and club legend Vincent Kompany last summer, they see Vertonghen as the perfect short-term solution to plug the gaps at the back. (h/t The Telegraph)
However, the Cityzens will have to face competition from a host of other clubs such as AS Roma, Inter Milan, Real Betis and Sevilla. Ajax, too, had shown an interest in the past, but have decided against pursuing his signing. (h/t The Telegraph)
It has been claimed that Tottenham haven’t been able to agree new terms with the 33-year-old Belgian international. And with no shortage of suitors, he will surely be on his way out of Tottenham this summer.
