Southampton close in on Weston McKennie as replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
According to a report from the Express, Southampton are leading the race to sign USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie, which ought to come as a boost to Tottenham in the pursuit of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
The 24-year-old Hojbjerg has been heavily linked with a switch to Tottenham for quite some time now. Hojbjerg’s contract with Southampton expires in less than year. And he has refused to pen an extension with the Saints, which led to him being stripped of club captaincy.
There had been concerns that Everton were going to beat Tottenham to the midfielder’s signing. However, Hojbjerg is intent on joining Spurs only, with reports claiming that the North Londoners were edging closer to his signing.
And now, Spurs have been handed another boost in the pursuit of the Danish international. Southampton, seemingly, have identified Schalke’s Weston McKennie as a replacement for their former captain and are understood to be leading the likes of Leicester City and Wolves in the race to sign the USMNT star. The report adds that Southampton will not be able to press ahead with the signing of McKennie until they have have offloaded Hojbjerg. So, that should speed up negotiations between Tottenham and Southampton for the transfer of Hojbjerg.
The 24-year-old has accumulated plenty of experience in the Premier League, having been with Southampton since 2016. And given his age, he would be a long-term solution to our problems in the defensive midfield position.
