Tottenham face intense battle to land Kim-Min Jae
According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football.london), Tottenham have a huge battle at their hands in the race to sign South Korean defender Kim-Min Jae from Beijing Guoan.
The 23-year-old Kim has been with the Chinese outfit since January last year and has grown into a key member of the team. In 95 senior career across all his clubs, Kim has scored three goals and assisted one more.
The South Korean featured for 78 minutes in Beijing Guoan’s second Chinese Super League game of the season against Wuhan Zall this past weekend.
Tottenham’s interest in the South Korean international came to light in June. Reports last month claimed that the club was confident of closing the deal for the 23-year-old as negotiations were held between the two clubs.
However, not much progress has been made on the deal, which has now allowed other clubs to join the pursuit of Kim. Indeed, as per the aforementioned report, Serie A giants Lazio have now emerged as serious contenders to sign Kim, while the likes of Everton, RB Leipzig and PSV Eindhoven are all keenly monitoring the situation as well.
Having lost Jan Vertonghen following the expiry of his contract, Tottenham are in desperate need of reinforcing the defence before next season commences.
While Kim doesn’t have any exposure to European football, he has been earning rave reviews for his performances in Asia. The 23-year-old has been dubbed as the ‘South Korean Virgil van Dijk’ for his imposing physical stature and the solidity he offers.
