Tottenham close in on Matt Doherty transfer

According to The Guardian, Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the signing of Wolves’ defender Matt Doherty, with the Irishman set to cost £12m plus a potential £5m in add-ons.

The 28-year-old Doherty started out at Home Farm FC in Ireland and then had stints with Belvedere and Bohemians, before joining Wolves in 2010. The right-back had a couple of loan stints with Hibernian and Bury FC before establishing himself as a regular for the Midlands’ outfit.

Till date, Doherty has racked up 302 appearances for Wolves, scoring 28 goals and setting up 41 more for his teammates. The Republic of Ireland international has been one of the best wing-backs in the Premier League since Wolves’ promotion to the top tier.

This past season, the 28-year-old produced an impressive return of seven goals and five assists from 50 matches in all competitions. And now, he is headed to Tottenham in a move that will cost the club an initial fee of £12m.

Spurs’ boss Jose Mourinho had been in the market for a new right-back this summer. The club have already allowed Kyle Walker-Peters to leave for Southampton and remain keen on selling Serge Aurier, with interest from AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen and AS Monaco. (h/t The Guardian)

However, the club was reluctant to sell Aurier until a replacement had been secured. And with Doherty’s deal almost tied up, the Ivorian could soon be on his way out of the club. (h/t The Guardian)

A report from Football.london claims that Tottenham are keen on wrapping up the transfer before Doherty flies to away for international duty with Republic of Ireland next week.

Following the arrivals of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Hart, the transfer of Doherty for a fee of just £12m is brilliant business by the club.
