Tottenham close in on £15m capture of 28-year-old PL star – Medical soon

Wolverhampton Wanderers accept £15m bid for Matt Doherty

According to Sky Sports, Wolverhampton Wanderers have accepted a bid from Tottenham Hotspur for defender Matt Doherty.

The Republic of Ireland international is a critical player for the Molineux outfit. He made 50 appearances for them last season as Wolves made it to the Europa League quarter-finals.

As per the report, the deal will cost around £15m. Doherty will have his medical soon.

The right-back spot is a position that is set for an overhaul this summer. Kyle Walker-Peters was sold to Southampton while Serge Aurier also looks to be on his way out. Spurs are ready to sell the latter at the right price. The likes of Monaco, AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen all remain interested. (h/t Sky Sports)

Like Aurier, Doherty is also an attacking right-back. The 28-year-old is much more measured than the erratic Ivorian. Moreover, he has a better defensive aptitude, making him a better all-round player.

A genuine threat in the opposition box, fans can be forgiven if they mistook his movement for that of a striker. It can be argued that Tottenham have made a shrewd move that will see them have upgraded a troublesome position.

The club was reluctant to sell Aurier until a replacement is secured. And with an agreement for Doherty now reached, the Ivorian could soon be on his way out. (h/t The Guardian)

Doherty has so far made 302 appearances for Wolves, scoring 28 goals and setting up 41. The experienced Doherty has established himself as one of the best wing-backs in the Premier League.

More Tottenham Hotspur News

Tottenham have already signed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Hart. The addition of Doherty will be a third smart addition to the team this summer.

Proven Premier League players, they should complement the stars we already have at the club. Hopefully, a return to the top table of European football is in the offing this time.
