Tottenham Hotspur could lose out on Darwin Nunez to Benfica
According to the Express, Tottenham Hotspur could lose out on 21-year-old UD Almeria striker Darwin Nunez to Portuguese giants Benfica.
The Uruguayan international impressed at Penarol before making the move to Almeria last summer. He has done well in Spain where he finished the season as the club’s top scorer.
Nunez scored 16 goals and assisted three more in 32 games as Almeria finished fourth in the Spanish second division. This saw them qualify for the playoffs. Unfortunately, they failed to gain promotion to the top flight.
Despite it being the second division, Nunez showcased enough to show he can compete amongst the best. Although he primarily plays as a striker, the youngster can also do a job on the flanks if needed.
Jose Mourinho is keen to bring in a striker this summer. Harry Kane remains the only senior frontman at the club.
With Troy Parrott also joining Millwall on loan, Mourinho will be left with no specialist striker to call on if Kane gets injured. Given the difficulties we faced last season, the club will need to show that lessons were learned.
Tottenham were offered the services of Nunez. However, the club will need to get a move on if they are keen to bring in the forward. According to the report the Uruguayan is closing in on a move to Benfica after landing in Portugal on Thursday.
Mourinho will need to sell before he can buy. This could see the Portuguese giants triumph us to Nunez. Spurs are also keen on Bournemouth star Callum Wilson.
Whether the Tottenham boss can bring in a backup to Kane remains to be seen.
