Troy Deeney admits he is a ‘Premier League striker’ amid Tottenham interest

In an interview with The Sun, Watford captain and striker Troy Deeney has claimed that he is still a Premier League material, amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur in the current transfer window.

Deeney came through the youth ranks at Walsall and had a loan spell at Halesowen, before joining Watford in 2010. Till date, he has featured 398 times for the Hornets, scoring 139 goals and setting up 59 more.

However, he could not help Watford stave off relegation from the Premier League, even though he managed to net 10 goals in 27 matches in 2019/20.

According to the Express and Star, Tottenham have expressed an interest in signing the 32-year-old striker this summer. Amidst the interest, the Englishman has claimed that he can still cut it out at the Premier League level, having recovered from his knee injury issues. (h/t The Sun)

“I definitely still see myself as a Premier League striker. I scored double figures last season on one leg. Now I’m over my knee troubles.”

Deeney went on to compare himself with some other strikers in the Premier League such as Sebastien Haller and Joelinton, who struggled to make an impact despite arriving in big money moves last summer. (h/t The Sun)

“How many did Sebastien Haller get last year for West Ham? Six or seven. Or Joelinton for Newcastle? Two. Put it into context: these are £40million players and I only cost £300,000. My time’s not up.”

To be fair, Deeney has a point. The 32-year-old has always been a potent goalscorer for Watford since their promotion to the Premier League. He may be entering the final years of his career, but can still be of value to a top-flight side.

However, it remains to be seen if Tottenham do make a move for the Watford skipper.
