Steven Bergwijn failed with a last-ditch effort to convince Donny van de Beek to join Spurs
According to Algemeen Dagblad (h/t Express), Donny van de Beek confirmed that Steven Bergwijn made a last ditch effort to bring him to Tottenham Hotspur.
The 23-year-old instead signed a five-year deal at Manchester United, becoming the Red Devils’ first signing of the summer transfer window.
An energetic player with good mobility, Van de Beek scored the winner against us in the first leg of the famous 2018/19 UEFA Champions League semifinals.
According to the report, Van de Beek revealed that he received a text message from compatriot Bergwijn. The message enquired if the former Ajax star would be willing to move to Tottenham.
“Steven Bergwijn texted me to see whether I would play for Spurs”
Unfortunately, it was not to be. It is debatable if things could have worked out differently had Bergwijn not waited until the last minute to make his move.
Spurs already strengthened their midfield this summer by bringing in Southampton skipper Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg. Adding Van de Beek to the mix would have given us a young, mobile midfield that could compete with the best.
Van de Beek isn’t just an athletic player with boundless energy. He also has an eye for goal and a knack for scoring important goals. The Dutchman scored an impressive 44 goals in 175 appearances from midfield for the Dutch giants prior to his move to Old Trafford.

Bringing in Van de Beek would have been a massive coup for us. The Dutchman would have added both quality and strength in depth to the Spurs midfield. Instead, he will now line up against us as a rival. Hopefully, he has completed his quota of scoring winners against us.
