Tottenham Hotspur eye Ollie Watkins as Harry Kane understudy
According to The Express, Tottenham Hotspur are keeping tabs on Brentford striker Ollie Watkins.
The 24-year-old is coming off a stellar season that saw him bag 26 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions. Alongside Said Benrahma and Bryan Mbeumo, Watkins formed the prolific BMW trio that saw Brentford fall just short of promotion to the top flight.
Capable of operating anywhere across the frontline, the 24-year-old will give Jose Mourinho a number of options if needed.
He will however add much-needed relief for star striker Harry Kane. The Spurs star is the club’s lone senior striker in the squad.
With young prospect Troy Parrott also joining Millwall on loan, Mourinho will be left with no specialist striker to call on if Kane gets injured. Given the difficulties we faced last season, the club’s interest in Watkins comes as a necessity rather than a luxury.
According to the report, Bees boss Thomas Frank has confirmed that the club is ready to sell Watkins as long as their £25m valuation is met.
Mourinho will however need to sell before he can buy. Despite the importance of bringing in a striker, the coronavirus pandemic’s effect on the club’s finances has placed the constraint on the Portuguese.
The players who could be on their way out are Juan Foyth, Serge Aurier, Danny Rose, and Paulo Gazzaniga. Whether we can offload these players in time and secure Watkins remains to be seen.

Mourinho is keen to build upon what was a promising end to his first season at Spurs. Although we missed out on the top four, Europa League qualification was secured on the final day.
With a number of glaring weaknesses plugged, it remains to be seen how high we can finish. Spurs kick off their season against Everton at home on 13th September.
