Tottenham dealt blow as PL rivals agree £28m fee for key transfer target
Aston Villa agree £28m fee for Tottenham target Ollie Watkins
According to BBC, Premier League side Aston Villa have agreed a £28m fee for the signing of Brentford striker Ollie Watkins, who was a transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur.
The 24-year-old Watkins came through the youth ranks at Exeter City and joined Brentford in the summer of 2017. He has grown into a key player for the Bees ever since, enjoying one of his best ever seasons last time out.
Watkins plundered 26 goals in 50 matches in all competitions, carrying Brentford to the brink of promotion to the Premier League. However, they fell short in the playoff finals against Fulham.
Following his exploits with the Bees, Watkins’ stoke rose high, with the likes of Aston Villa and Tottenham taking keen interest in the English striker. (h/t Birmingham Mail)
Tottenham’s interest in the 24-year-old is very much understandable. The Lilywhites lack any sort of viable backup for star striker Harry Kane at the moment after having loaned out Troy Parrott.
The team suffered in the absence of Kane in the season gone by. And if they go into the new campaign without addressing the issue, Jose Mourinho & co. will once again be in for a difficult season.
Watkins would have made a fine signing for us, given his potential and the form he has been in of late. However, it seems like Aston Villa have beaten us to the punch to sign the striker. (h/t BBC)
As per the report, Villa have agreed a transfer fee of £28m for Watkins, which could rise to £33m with bonuses and add-ons.

With the Watkins’ ship seemingly sailed, we must now swiftly turn our attentions to other targets. With the season beginning in less than a week, it would have been ideal to have concluded all transfer business by then.
Nevertheless, with the transfer window open till October first week, the club still has time to resolve the issue.
