Twitter reacts as Tottenham Hotspur fall to Everton at home
Tottenham Hotspur got off to the worst of starts as they lost 1-0 at home to Everton on the opening day of the 2020/21 Premier League campaign.
The game saw debuts for two of our summer signings – Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Matt Doherty. However, neither stood out as Everton were comfortably the better team on the night.
A thumping header by Dominic Calvert-Lewin was the difference on the night. Spurs were far below their best and did not look like changing the outcome of the match.
The lack of creativity was a major determinant as star striker Harry Kane touched the ball just twice in the opposition box.
While these are still early days, a return to the Champions League looks a long way off if we continue to play like this. This was Everton’s first win away to a top-six side in seven years.
Spurs next face Lokomotiv Plovdiv in the Europa League second qualifying round on Thursday. At the very least, given the lack of effort today, the players clearly have reserves of strength to down the Bulgarians.
Tottenham fans were unhappy with the lack of desire and effort shown. This was made clear as they took to Twitter to speak their minds. We take a look at some of them below.

Absolutely disgraceful performance. In all my years as a fan of this team I’ve never seen a group of players so lazy and pathetic. I’m taking my fanhood to Everton where it looks like they know how to run a football club.

Who cares what happened on the field, the game is about profit and our owners making a fortune

Clear what team had ambition, went out and spent the money on players they needed.
Take notes and do the same, Levy.
We have ONE STRIKER.
SORT IT OUT

I don’t even know where to start.
This team is absolutely bang average.
Despite Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris, everyone else is bang average and I can’t stand to watch Dele Alli play anymore. Eric Dier is not a good CB.. I miss Vertonghen already and honestly? Winks is useless*— Gonçalo 🦁 (@F1d4lg0) September 13, 2020
