Antonio Rudiger wanted by Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur could return for Antonio Rudiger in January

According to Football Insider (h/t Football.london), Kevin Phillips believes Tottenham Hotspur could make a move for Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger in January.

The German international is out of favour at Stamford Bridge. He has played a single minute this season and continues to be on the periphery of Frank Lampard’s plans.

“They have made some fantastic signings this summer but I think Mourinho will dive into the market in January so the Rudiger deal could happen then.”

Phillip’s view was also backed by Germany manager Joachim Loew. He admitted that the defender will look to once again leave Chelsea in the winter.

With the European Championships set to be held next summer, playing regularly will help Rudiger’s cause of making the German squad.

“I think he’ll try to leave again in the winter.”

Spurs were keen to sign a defender before the European window closed last week. We were heavily linked with a move for Milan Skriniar and Rudiger but neither of them came to fruition.

Having lost Jan Vertonghen earlier in the summer, a spot is open in the Spurs squad for a defender. Whether we are willing to wait until January to fill it remains to be seen.

It was revealed last week that Rudiger chose against moving to Tottenham owing to the rivalry between the clubs. Only time will tell if the player is willing to overlook that aspect in three months’ time.

Spurs are also keeping tabs on Swansea City centre-back Joe Rodon. The 22-year-old has established himself as a leading defender in the Championship.

While the European transfer window may have closed, Premier League clubs can still make deals with Championship sides until October 16.
