Tottenham Hotspur missed out on Benfica ace Darwin Nunez

According to The Express, Tottenham Hotspur missed out on South American star Darwin Nunez earlier in the summer.

The Uruguayan international impressed at Penarol before making the move to Almeria last summer. He has done well in Spain, where he finished the season as the club’s top scorer.

Spurs were keen to bring in a backup striker this summer. Having relied on Harry Kane over the last few seasons, it was imperative that we did not place all our eggs in one basket again.

Tottenham eventually brought in Carlos Vinicius on a season-long loan. According to the report, Nunez was ahead of him in our list of targets.

Given his performances so far this season, it is easy to understand why. Nunez has enjoyed an excellent start to life at Benfica. He has so far scored three goals and assisted five more in just six appearances. (h/t Transfermarkt)

The Uruguayan’s performances have impressed managed Jorge Jesus. The veteran tactician believes the 21-year-old will one day command a fee greater than the £113million that Atletico Madrid paid for Joao Felix.

It would appear we have missed out on a potential world-class player. That is not to say that we have scraped the barrel for Vinicius. Far from it.

The Brazilian has looked lively and made two assists on his debut for the club earlier this week. His performance could in fact convince Mourinho to play Vinicius alongside Harry Kane.

These are still early days for both players. It remains to be seen how their careers develop in the matches to come.

Nunez has also represented Uruguay at the senior level. With the likes of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani not getting any younger, the 21-year-old could be his country’s next big forward.
