Gareth Southgate backs Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane to become England’s leading scorer
According to the Mirror, England boss Gareth Southgate has backed Tottenham Hotspur ace Harry Kane to become the country’s all-time top goal-getter.
The 27-year-old has an impressive 32 strikes in just 49 games for the Three Lions. He will reach a landmark 50 caps for his country in the Nations League fixture against Belgium tomorrow. (h/t Mirror)
Despite an impressive output for the side, Southgate believes Kane’s best is yet to come. With him also showcasing his creative side for Spurs this season, that may very well be true. (h/t Mirror)
As things stand Kane is England’s sixth all-time top goalscorer. The list is led by Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney with 52 goals.
Rooney achieved his tally in 120 games. If Kane continues scoring at his current rate, it will be a question of when and not if he will usurp the record for himself. (h/t Mirror)
“His strike rate for us is quite phenomenal and he’s obviously got time on his side to crack on and chase Wayne’s record.”
Doing so will also see Kane overtake the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton and Gary Lineker. At just 27, there is scope for the Spurs star to create a bracket that is way ahead of the current top spot.
While the striker might have an eye on breaking the record, Southgate has made it clear where his skipper’s priorities lie. He has backed Kane to put the team and their needs first. (h/t Mirror)
“But I know from his perspective, while the personal achievements he is driven towards, he’s all about the team winning now.”
