Tottenham Hotspur star Toby Alderweireld feared to have suffered a serious injury
According to Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho fears ace defender Toby Alderweireld has picked up a serious injury.
The Belgian international was taken off in yesterday’s impressive 2-0 win over Manchester City. The veteran centre-back impressed and even made an impressive last-ditch tackle to prevent Gabriel Jesus in the first half.
The only blot on an impressive night was Alderweireld’s injury setback. It is feared that he has picked up a groin injury. He received treatment on the pitch before being replaced by Joe Rodon. (h/t Sky Sports)
“It’s bad. It is a muscular injury in his adductor. It’s a difficult injury, for sure.”
Mourinho admitted that he feels sorry for Alderweireld. When asked if he fears the defender will be out long term, the Spurs boss answered in the affirmative. (h/t Sky Sports)
“I would say so”
The Tottenham tactician refused to blame Belgium and the player’s exertions on international duty as a reason for the injury. The setback, however, leaves the club undermanned for the Europa League clash against Ludogorets this week.
While Alderweireld could be on the sidelines for a while, this has given Joe Rodon an opportunity to showcase what he can do. With a spot on the roster now open, the young Welshman can stake a claim to play a larger role at the club.
Gareth Bale had earlier spoken of how he expects Rodon to take opportunities when given. It would appear it has arrived sooner than expected. Whether he can now showcase the ability expected of him remains to be seen.
