Eric Dier has acknowledged the impact Jose Mourinho has had on the club
As per Mirror, Tottenham defender Eric Dier has said that he believes Jose Mourinho can help the club win their first trophy in 13 years.
Tottenham fans have been taunted with the ‘Spursy’ nickname for the past few years, which refers to them losing from the jaws of victory and choking on the big occasions. (h/t Mirror)
Eric Dier revealed that he laments that tag and says that it isn’t fair to label them with it.
“That’s something that’s quite frustrating to be honest because I think, as I said before, there were seasons where we finished second in the league and people called it Spursy. We finished second. We just didn’t manage to win it and people were calling that Spursy. I don’t believe this team has had that tag for a long time.”
However, with Jose Mourinho now at the helm, Dier believes that the ‘Spursy’ nickname is now a thing of the past.
“I don’t think teams enjoy playing us. I think we’re physical, I think we’re aggressive, I think we’re determined, we’ve got a good attitude and the manager has definitely brought an extra edge to that. He’s more demanding in certain areas and ruthless with you individually and as a team…”
Eric Dier believes that the Special One has brought the edge back to Tottenham as he insisted they should stop being ‘nice’ on the pitch, and has now instilled a winning mentality at the club that will inspire them to hold on to the top of the table.
“It’s in those kinds of games [against West Brom] when it’s really important to be a big nasty, to be a bit ruthless in those difficult games away from home against difficult sides. I think those are the games we’ve suffered more in…”
“The mentality is game by game and every game we go into, we’re trying to win it, no matter the game, tournament, the opposition, it doesn’t matter, We’re trying to win every game.”
Spurs now sit at the top of the Premier League table on goal difference after the impressive 2-0 win against Manchester City during the weekend.
It’s in these big games that the club must get results if Mourinho’s men are to finish the season with the league title.
Spurs’ next assignment is facing Ludogorets in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday before the much-anticipated derby against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
