Mikel Arteta admits Tottenham deserve the top spot in the Premier League

As reported by the Guardian, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has admitted that rivals Tottenham Hotspur are deserving of occupying the top spot in the Premier League this season.

Ten games into the season, we are leading the race for the Premier League, with 21 points on the board. Reigning champions Liverpool are level on points with us but behind on goal difference, while Chelsea are just two points below in third.

Following the opening day defeat to Everton, Jose Mourinho’s men are unbeaten in the Premier League – the nine-game run without a defeat is the longest such streak in the league currently.

And Arteta, whose Arsenal side are languishing in the 14th place in the table currently, has admitted that Tottenham deserve to be at the top of the standings in the league. (h/t Guardian)

“It is what it is. The table is like that because they deserve it more than us and they’ve done things better than us. In certain moments in certain games they have, and they have got the results. We have to accept that.”

Tottenham face Arsenal in the first North London derby of the season at home on Sunday evening. And Arteta insisted that the Gunners will be aiming to reduce the eight-point gap between us and them.

“But we want to go there and make that gap three points smaller.”

It has been a solid start to the season and the fact that we are so far ahead of our bitter rivals makes it so much more enjoyable. As things stand, Arsenal are closer to the relegation zone than they are to us. Let’s hope we can further their misery with another win on Sunday.
